Pride Winnipeg festivities start Friday

WINNIPEG – The colours of the rainbow will be on display this weekend as Pride Winnipeg celebrates all sexualities.

Organizers expect more than 30,000 people to attend the Pride Winnipeg Festival, which has celebrated the city’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual and queer community since 1987.

“Through the years it’s grown. Part of it is, you know, the acceptance,” said Jonathan Niemczak, the president of Pride Winnipeg. “We definitely had more LGBTTQ folks in 1987, but they weren’t comfortable actually marching. Also back then, you could be fired from your job if your employer found out.”

The festival started with the raising of a rainbow flag, the symbol of the LGBTTQ community, at 12:15 p.m. at Winnipeg City Hall.

There will be a rally at the Manitoba Legislative Building grounds at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by the Pride Parade, the centerpiece of the event.

More information about the festival’s events can be found on the Pride Winnipeg website.
