WINNIPEG – Several shots have been exchanged between Winnipeg Police and a man who remains barricaded inside a home on Stella Avenue.
Residents say as many as six gun shots were heard Wednesday evening in standoff that continues at this hour.
Police at Stella Ave. on Wednesday July 30
Police had originally been called to the home on Stella between Andrews Street and Powers Street for reports of a “man in distress”.
Police say when they arrived just before 11 am, an armed man then threatened to harm himself and officers.
Talks to diffuse the situation continued for hours, but around 8:20 pm negotiations broke down. Police say the man opened fire on officers and they fired back.
Police don’t believe anyone has been injured but could not answer whether or not anyone else was inside the home.
One resident told Global News the police were everywhere, crouching behind cars and bushes
“It’s scary when shots go off, it’s really piercing to the ears,” said resident Renae Houles.
At one point power was cut to the street. Buses have since been brought in for residents who don’t have electricity.
