Global Winnipeg breaks down back-to-school prices with 3-store shop

WINNIPEG — ‘Tis the season for back to school shopping.

Making sure you have everything on the lists and having to pay for all the items can be stressful and costly.

Global News is trying to make the process the least painful possible.

We shopped a Grade 4 supply list from Ecole Julie-Riel at Superstore, Walmart and Staples.

Of the 26 items on the list we could only find 20 of the products at Superstore and 22 at Walmart. Staples stocked the most at 23 items.

The toughest-to-find items were specific dictionary brands. The list wanted a Merriam Webster Dictionary in paperback format as well as a Larousse de Poche French/English and French dictionaries.

Global News did not buy the same brand at every store, instead choosing to go for the cheapest option.

Of the 17 items all three stores had in stock, Walmart had the lowest total price at $43.18 followed by Superstore at $47.95 and Staples with $49.51.

It does pay to shop around if you have the patience.

A 24 pack of crayons is only 20 cents at Staples. It will cost you $1 at Walmart and $2 at Superstore.
