WINNIPEG – Classes are cancelled Thursday and Friday at Kildonan-East Collegiate after a fire shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday.
Police believe the fire was deliberately set and the arson unit is investigating.
The Winnipeg high school was evacuated while firefighters extinguished the fire in a second-floor washroom.
The fire was contained to the washroom and quickly extinguished, a news release from the city said.
Damage is estimated at $500,000 because of extensive smoke damage.
River East-Transcona School Division officials said they will assess the damages and hope to be able to resume classes Monday.
Parents and students are asked to check the school or school division websites on the weekend to confirm the school is open Monday.
All students and staff made it out of the building safely.
Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call police at 204-986-6813 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
